Chapter Eleven
Donât Leave Me
The Golden Gate Bridge looked amazing during the sunset, the beautiful rainbow colors adorning the sky. The sky was a pale pink as the sun peeked over the water. Thatâs what she imagined it looked like anyway.
Even so, for the first time in years, Lexi experienced a few good weeks where nobody knew her story, where nobody could judge her. She was rebuilding herself, and for once, she was happy with who she saw in the mirror.
Putting a whole country between herself and Drake had seemed drastic at first, but she needed to go so far away that he wouldnât seep back into her life. She needed the distance; otherwise, she would go running back to him. Lexi knew that she would.
Her heart still longed for him during the cold and lonely nights, imagining those warm nights that were spent by the fire and cuddled in his arms. Laughter was shared between them. But, as events had shown, moving 3,000 miles across the country still wasnât enough. It was all for nothing.
Maybe she was to blame for it all. The thought crossed her mind numerous times over the past few weeks. She could have done so much more. Perhaps she should have fought harder for their relationship. There were a million things that she could have done differently.
Maybe if she had been more understanding of his addiction, or maybe if she had waited at the hospital longer, they would be celebrating their lives together instead of apart. If she had gotten him help sooner, it could have gone an entirely different way where she wouldnât be dodging him in a brand-new city.
She sighed and looked down at the bowl of soggy cereal in front of her. She had places that she needed to be, and sitting here thinking about what might have been was nothing short of insanity.
When Lexi walked out of her front door and into the sloping streets of San Francisco, the last person she expected to see was Drake. Yet, there he was. Again. He looked little like the man she had left behind. His eyes were the same though. She would know those eyes anywhere, and she nearly ran back into his arms that very moment.
Instead, she tried to pretend that she wasnât bothered by him being there. Lexi kept her head high and stared at him with her mouth in a firm line.
âI slept out here for you. I thought about sleeping in my car, but I was afraid Iâd miss you if I did.â
Lexi raised an eyebrow. âGood for you?â
She shrugged and ran a hand through her hair.
âIâm not sure what you want me to say here, Drake. We broke up. Youâre acting like a stalker.â
He held out his hand. In his palm, was the love letter that he had written for her during those beginning moments of meeting. Lexi thought she had gotten rid of it; Drake must have pulled it out of the trash when she wasnât around. He heart began to melt.
